Sigma AF 300-600mm f/4 DG OS Sports Lens
The Sigma 300-600 mm f/4 DG OS | Sports is a groundbreaking super-telephoto zoom lens designed for full-frame mirrorless systems (Sony E-mount and Leica L-mount).
What makes it standout: a constant f/4 aperture across the entire 300-600 mm zoom range — rare at this focal length — combined with a high-performance optical design and professional features tailored for sports, wildlife and action photography.
It features 28 elements in 21 groups (including 6 FLD and 1 SLD glass elements) for excellent correction of aberrations over its range.
It also offers advanced features like an inner-zoom mechanism (so overall length remains almost constant), a 5.5-stop optical stabiliser (OS2 algorithm) at the 600 mm end, HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) autofocus, weather-sealed “Sports” build with magnesium-alloy body, thermal insulation paint, drop-in filter holder etc.
Key Features
- Constant maximum aperture of f/4 throughout the 300-600 mm range for consistent exposure & depth-of-field performance.
- Outstanding optical design: 28 elements in 21 groups, including 6 FLD (Very Low Dispersion) and 1 SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements to control chromatic aberration and maintain sharpness across the frame.
- Powerful image stabilisation: Up to 5.5 stops of CIPA-rated OS at 600 mm, making handheld or monopod work more feasible at extreme reach.
- High-end build quality: “Sports” line construction, including magnesium alloy body, thermal insulation paint, dust/splash resistance, internal zoom/focus mechanism to keep size/manageability.
- Professional usability: Drop-in filter holder (40.5mm filters) even at this large lens size, function ring, focus-limiter, customizable buttons, Arca-Swiss compatible tripod collar — all designed for pro workflows.
Best Suitable
- Wildlife photographers who need extreme telephoto reach and want the flexibility of a zoom rather than a fixed prime.
- Sports or action photographers covering fast-moving subjects at a distance, who need f/4 brightness, fast AF and stabilisation.
- Professional shooters on mission-critical assignments (e.g., motorsports, aviation, large-field nature) wanting top-tier optical and mechanical build.
- Videographers working with high-end mirrorless cameras who want telephoto zoom with consistent aperture and minimised focus-breathing and size/weight optimised for such work.
- Serious enthusiasts or rental houses who want a premium supertelephoto alternative at a (relatively) more flexible zoom format than pure primes.
FAQ – Sigma AF 300-600mm f/4 DG OS Sports Lens
Does this lens support Tele-Converters (TC) on both mounts?
The L-Mount version supports the TC-1411 (1.4×) and TC-2011 (2×) teleconverters for a reach up to 600–1200 mm (at f/5.6/f/8) with autofocus. The Sony E-mount version however is not compatible with Sigma’s tele-converters for AF.
How heavy and large is it? Is handheld use realistic?
The lens is large and heavy — for Sony E-mount: approx 3,970 g; for L-Mount: approx 3,985 g.
The diameter is about φ167 mm and length ~467.9 mm for the L-Mount version.
Hand-holding at 600 mm is still challenging; monopod/tripod use is strongly recommended.
What is the minimum focusing distance, and magnification?
Minimum focus distance is approx 2.80 m at the 300 mm end and approx 4.50 m at 600 mm.
Maximum magnification ratio is ~0.17× (≈1:6) at around 470 mm.
Is this lens only for full-frame or can I use it on APS-C?
It is designed for full-frame (35 mm format) mirrorless cameras. On APS-C you could mount it but you’d get a narrower field of view (and the weight/size still apply) — so generally used on full-frame bodies.
